Sergei Gonchar Named Pens Assistant Coach

The Gonch show is officially on the bench for the defending Stanley Cup Champs. Head coach Mike Sullivan and GM Jim Rutherford made the announcement Tuesday.

Pittsburgh has already added Mark Recchi to its coaching roster too.

Recchi’s stats: 1,652 games, 577 lamp lights, 956 clean dishes and 1,033 minutes in the sin bin.

Gonchar’s Stats: 1,301 games, 220 goals (eh), 591 assists, 981 minutes in the box.

So put that all together and the Pens just picked up a couple of coaches who have combined for 2,014 penalty minutes.

But seriously, nice move getting Gonch as a full time coach. He brings experience and hockey knowledge beyond most people’s years. As if the Pens needed any more of that with Sid the kid leading the squad.
