Yankees Kill Two Birds With One Stone in Big Trade with the White Sox

The Yankees pulled off a huge trade last night right after their 6-3 win against the Twins. Yankees acquired 1B/3B Todd Frazier, RP David Robertson, and RP Tommy Kahnle for the third ranked prospect in their organization and top 30 in baseball, Blake Rutherford, Tyler Clippard, Ian Clarkin, and Tito Polo.

The Yankees fill a huge hole at first base by getting Todd Frazier. The batting average doesn’t look good at .207 but he has 16 HR which is a huge upgrade in production to what the Yankees have had this year. The Yankees won’t be asking him to hit in the middle of the order, he’ll likely hit somewhere in the 6-8 range which is huge value down at the bottom of the order. He also has struggled at home at Guaranteed Rate Field (worst name for a stadium in all of sports) hitting .142 with 5 HR, while on the road he is hitting .267 with 11 HR, so a change of scenery is hopefully exactly what he needed to get back to the All-Star player he once was. Frazier is just a rental piece which is all the Yankees needed since the forgotten man Greg Bird should be back next year.

Adding the two relievers is the biggest part of the deal. Tommy Kahnle and David Robertson were the 8th and 9th inning duo for the White Sox and they now move to lesser roles with the Yankees. They won’t just be helping this years team either. Robertson will still be under contract for next year at around $14 mil while Kahnle still has 3.5 years on his deal at basically chump change for the Yankees.

Adding them gives Girardi so many options in the bullpen now and sets him up to manipulate probably the best bullpen in baseball now. Chad Green, Adam Warren, Tommy Kahnle, Dellin Betances, David Robertson, and Aroldis Chapman…Brian Cashman you’ve done it again my man. The thing that makes me most excited about this is the endless ways Dellin Betances can be used now. Instead of just pencilling Betances in for the 7th inning and Robertson for the 8th, Girardi should turn Betances in to the role of Andrew Miller in Cleveland. Put Betances in whenever the highest leverage outs are from like the 4th inning on. Girardi has the luxury of just considering this now that he has 6 back end of the bullpen caliber relievers.

Now moving on to what the Yankees had to give up. Losing Blake Rutherford, 2016 first round pick stings. The guy is gonna be the real deal. But he is only 20 years old, in High A, and is about 3-4 years away from making an impact in the big leagues. Admittedly this is me trying to talk myself in to making it sting less but really the Yankees don’t need that, especially when they have so many other outfield prospects in their system and Bryce Harper looming. Everyone else in the trade I couldn’t give two shits about, especially you Tyler Clippard. Getting rid of Tyler Clippard is so fucking great. That guy is one of the main reasons the Yankees got on this horrid 30 game streak. Thank the fucking lord we don’t have to deal with his bullshit anymore.

All in all love this trade. Strengthens the pen, gives the Yankees a legitimate first baseman, and even gets rid of that four eyed fuck.
